Res Life Policies and Procedures

Residency Requirement

Converse University is a residential college and views on-campus living as an integral part of the educational experience.

The Converse University residency requirement has changed; All traditional students under age 24 admitted for enrollment beginning after Spring 2024, will be required to live on campus unless they graduated from a Spartanburg County high school and plan to make their home with their parents/legal guardian in their permanent residence in Spartanburg County. Previously enrolled Converse students will be grandfathered into the policy at their time of initial enrollment.

Also, students age 24+, with custodial children residing with them, and/or students who are married must reside off-campus. Students should submit in writing to the Dean of Students a request for a waiver from this policy if they meet any of the exceptions outlined in the policy.

Converse students walk across campus in the spring.

Students who are married may continue to reside in Converse University residence halls; however, marital status does not change the visitation policy and spouses are subject to the standard visitation policy requirements. If Converse students marry each other, they may not reside together in on-campus housing.

Students living in college residence halls must be full-time students. The dean of students will handle infractions of the residency requirement policy. Students found in violation of this policy may be charged university room and board fees.

Transfer Housing Policy

Converse University recognizes the importance of students living on campus and learning in community with other students. On-campus residential communities foster environments where students develop a stronger sense of belonging, and they provide valuable support and guidance for students as they navigate the college experience.

The University also recognizes that each transfer student has a different background and situation. At the time of deposit and prior to the opening of the term, any transfer student may apply for a waiver from the University housing requirement and must put their request in writing to the Dean of Students..

Requests will be reviewed based on individual circumstance, and a waiver may be received if students meet the requirements below:

  • Must be at least 21 years old during the initial term of enrollment and meet at least 2 of the following requirements:
    • Must enroll with a minimum of 36 transferable college-level credit hours completed from another institution (dual credit or AP credit not applicable) with a at least 2.5 cumulative GPA
    • Most recent institution of enrollment must be in Spartanburg, Greenville, or Cherokee counties
    • At the date of admission, show proof of an existing lease or contract for housing that extends beyond their enrollment date.

Any extenuating personal circumstances that would be pertinent to this request. This request must be approved by the Dean of Students or their designee.

Students approved for a Transfer Housing Waiver must submit an updated lease to the Dean of Students office at the beginning of each Fall and/or Spring term.

All conduct offcampus is subject to the University Off Campus Conduct policy and may be adjudicated per the Student Code of Conduct. Each academic year, eligibility to keep the waiver will be based on a review of your academic standing, code of conduct, and honor violations.

Roommate Preference

Roommate assignments are based on the information you provide Student Development and Success through the Roommate Preference Information Form when you enroll. Every effort is made to place students with compatible roommates with common interests. However, each student is unique and each roommate relationship requires patience, communication, and compromise.

It is important to be honest when completing the Roommate Preference Information, as this is the information that will be used to determine who your new roommate will be. Be sure that you specify which areas of interest are important to you.

Converse University Residential Community Contract

Converse University has a strong honor tradition and history. The residential communities are designed to uphold and actively live this honor tradition. The Honor Tradition clearly states “This tradition encompasses all areas of student life and is built on mutual trust and responsibility.” This document outlines the rights and responsibilities accepted by all members of the Converse community. The residential community includes residence halls, classrooms, and dining hall facilities.
