About Mathematics

As a Converse Mathematics student, you’ll hone your critical thinking, reasoning, and logic skills, in addition to becoming adept with a wide range of computations and proofs. You’ll learn to question all assumptions and carefully assess claims. The tools you’ll learn to wield in the math program will make you a valuable asset to a variety of disciplines and industries.

  • You can expect one-on-one interactions both in and out of the classroom thanks to Converse’s small class sizes and hands-on faculty.
  • Our three foundations of math reasoning, computations, and proofs will prepare you for graduate study or a variety of careers in math.
  • Participate in hands-on research opportunities.
  • Our uniquely interdisciplinary program offers ample opportunity for you to connect your math skills with other areas such as the sciences, business, and accounting.

Addie Ledbetter Taylor Lashley Assistant Professor of Mathematics Dr. Jessica Williams

Professional Conferences

Converse mathematics majors get grant funding to attend regional and national professional conferences while they are still undergraduates – a rare experiential learning opportunity you won’t find at most universities. At these conferences, our students sample cutting-edge scholarship through lectures, panels and poster sessions, while gaining experience presenting posters of their own. The networking is fantastic – students can meet graduate school reps, professional peers and mentors, and even potential employers.

Senior Seminars

Students choose a particular topic of interest in mathematics and work closely with a faculty member to research and conduct a presentation as part of their major during their senior seminar.

Recent seminar topics have included:

  • Game Theory and Mathematics
  • Cryptology
  • The Math of Magic Squares
  • Women of Mathematics
  • Graph Theory

Social Learning and Class Excursions

Converse math majors study hard and play hard, together – and often at the same time! Field trips and parties with their professors mix fun and learning while creating bonds that last a lifetime.

Math Christmas Party
At the math department holiday party, students played with snowflake fractals and worked out just how many gifts the “Twelve Days of Christmas” entail.

Math Students

As a math major, you’ll take courses in classical mathematics as well as special topics courses designed by the faculty. The foundation for a mathematics major includes the calculus sequence and a collection of more advanced, essential courses such as Differential Equations and Abstract Algebra. Coursework in these areas serve as pillars of the study of mathematics in general, so that after program completion you’ll be prepared to tackle any mathematical problem. The program culminates with a senior seminar project in which you’ll select an area of interest in mathematics to research independently.

In addition to learning to solve higher-level problems, majoring in Mathematics will allow you to effectively communicate logic concepts, to organize and analyze data, and to use technology in conjunction with other problem-solving skills.

Sample Courses

  • Number Theory
  • Mathematical Modeling in Biology
  • Abstract Algebra
  • Differential Equations
  • Modern Geometry
